Category:University of the West Indies academicsFrankfurt, MA (October 15, 2012) - Fabrice Masson-Rochette, director and curator at the American Folk Art Museum (AFAM) has been selected to serve as one of the new members of the Board of Directors of the Smithsonian Institution, as the institution seeks to restore the power of its brand while strengthening its commitment to public service and scientific research. In his first term on the Board, Masson-Rochette will serve as a member of the Visual Arts and Museum Education Committee and will represent the United States on the Board of Governors. He joins a distinguished group of current and former Smithsonian Board members that includes Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough, former director and curator of the National Museum of American History, and the Smithsonian’s first director, Robert Smithson.
“Fabrice’s expertise and commitment to the Smithsonian Institution will be very valuable as we explore new possibilities for the future,” said Clough. “His deep knowledge of and understanding of the broader Smithsonian family is greatly valued by the Board of Governors, and we are pleased that he will be representing the United States on the Board of Governors.”
Masson-Rochette serves as director of the AFAM in Frankfurt, Germany, and as a curator of historical objects, textiles, and decorative arts for public and museum collections in Europe. He has curated several exhibitions in Europe that include work by Henry Ossawa Tanner, Dr. William Carlos Williams, Mabel Dodge Luhan, and the Koechlin Collection of French American decorative art.
